To make, combine:

Half a curly lettuce head

Handful of rucola

Large handful each of chopped red and yellow bell peppers

4 large pickled chillies

Juice of half a lemon

1 teaspoon of oregano

2 tablespoons of olive oil

One thing you will get fresh and locally grown are apples this time of year. And potatoes.

The farmers market in Tubingen is really close to where I stay and so I make it a point to go there at least once a week. They are up and running from 7 am to 1 pm on Mondays/Wednesday/Fridays. I did buy a couple of sausages at a convinience store the other day and ate just a quarter of one, and meat just doesnt agree with me anymore - feels alien after not having had it for so long! I gave the remains to a colleague, who will in turn get me some Glühwein and Sauerkraut tommorow. I'm also feeling a bit constipated - and I think it's because of that low-calorie sugar replacer pellets we have at our place - the honey's over and there is no regular sugar. So, I just had to get some honey from the farmers market today to see if that makes a difference!
Got myself some apricot jam, honey, yellow and red bell peppers and some salad leaves (don't know the name!). But was so impressed with the variety and freshness of the produce. Its got the Mumbai farmers market beat hands down.
We went there over the weekend as my boss was driving down to the Austrian border for some weekend ski-ing. As soon as he showed me a photo of Neuschwanstein, I went "Oh, the Cinderella castle!!!" Fussen was definitely on my to-go list, so I said why not?! We drove on the Autobahn, and I also saw and touched my first snow - no kidding...The only snow you see in Mumbai is the one you see inside a badly broken down refrigerator. My landlord, that day, asked me if I wanted to join him in a anti-nuclear protest rally at Stuttgart, and that the reactor there is very unsafe and there could be a repeat of the Japan disaster. Tempting. Tempting. But I had a little fairytale castle to pay homage to first.

Apparantly, Neuschwanstein is a bit of a tourist trap, with many German colleagues not even visited the famed castle. You'll see a horde of tourists - mostly Chinese or Japanese. The entry fee is a hefty 12 euros, and you pay more if you want a bus ride up to the castle. Add to that, you cannot take photos once inside the castle. Bummer, yeah. Oh, did I mention, it's freezing cold up there (at least for an Indian)?!

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. It's gorgeous on the inside and you could not have asked for a more dramatic setting than high up the German Alps. Fairytale-like, indeed! Now, if only princes existed in this day and age, and I could get permanent residency inside the castle....
The biggest dampener was not having a smoking zone inside the airport. There's only one place - a private lounge 'Celebrations' where you pay a cover charge of Rs. 1000 to enter and theres a place to smoke, your luggage is neatly stowed and you dont have to look over your shoulder every other minute to see if everythings still around (handy when you're traveling alone); you also get one free drink of your choice (always handy when you're flying) and starters.

I'm so glad I ordered the fruit platter on the lufthansa flight to Frankurt - was grinning ear to ear seeing the day old, limpid Asian vegetarian fare on the nearby seats. But what was really great about the flight despite my crummy seat at the rear, chatty neighbors, and some turbulence, was the super-cute male steward! Mr. Graf, if you're reading this, thank you for taking good care of me. I know I'm difficult when I dont have my feet on mother earth.

Having reached Frankfurt and whiling away my five hour layover to Stuttgart, I did some duty free shopping (essentials like ciggies and a mountain of chocolate), and gawked at the incredibly fresh looking food items in store there. I had a marzipan croissant and a heiße schokolade und milch (also known as the BEST. CHOCOLATE.MILK.EVER). Yes, my veganism is out the window. I even just had a tuck into a sausage. If I've come half way around the world, I might as well do as the locals do and immerse myself in all things german. I can always go back and eat dal chawal or raw vegan when I am back! (hopefully).

And despite popular belief that Germans are cold, everyone was smiling. Its another matter that I did feel lost there and not knowing the language, I turned to another Indian was assistance.

Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg is this sleepy little charming village in the south of Germany, which is more famous for its university than anything else. The first thing that hit me when I left the airport with L. was how chilly it was even at 4 PM! I was told to pack my warmest clothes, but living in Mumbai, you hardly ever need anything more than a shawl. Plus we have no idea what 0 or 10 degrees feels like. Thankfully my landlord lended me his jacket to keep warm. But I'm definitly buying a more shapely jacket from H&M at MarktPlatz.

Its funny the building opposite where I live has 'Nazi' graffiti-ed on the wall. But, its such a pretty looking building. As are most of the buildings in the village.
In Tubingen, I'm at Neckarhalde, 38 (live there) and Neckarhalde 5 (office). If anyone's around, do get in touch with me. Here's the view from my rooms. I'm told to make judicious use of the available curtains because there are horny uni students passing by (not that I care!).
Have been superbusy getting my visa in order, and have just been eating cooked meals at home or a plate of fruit in the office canteen. Why now? Because I was dying to try out my celery. We get orange+celery juice in many juice shops, but for some reason I've never seen celery being sold at the supermarket or veggie vendors. So, when I saw some at Nature's Basket, I immediately grabbed some!

Celery, Carrot, Lettuce, Cauliflower Salad
Well, this gets a bit tough after your first crack at this. But here goes:

I'm a bit of a conspiracy nut - I dont believe the pyramids were built by aliens, but do think 9/11 was an inside job (Ok, there goes half my readership ;-)). Bush was an idiot, but Cheney was pure evil! Don't believe me? Here's a very recent photo:

I love a good tear-jerker. My favorite movies are Dead Man Walking, Life is Beautiful, Trainspotting, Brokeback Mountain, Schindler's List, A Time to Kill, Judgment at Nuremberg, and such.

I don't get Justin Bieber and all the madness and hype surrounding him. But maybe that's because I'm old enough to be his mom.

My personality type is Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Perceiving (INTP) - Only about 4% of all people have mypersonality, including 2% of all women and 6% of all men.

People call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that distinguish me from a doormat - Rebecca West. Well said.

I don't like white chocolate. Just the color is off-putting. Why is it even called chocolate if there is no cocoa?

I'm off to Europe in mid-March for a month (assuming an a-OK from the Schengen Visa guys - fingers crossed!!). Woo-hooo!

I even commented yesterday that chocolate has milk and hence is off-limits, in that I don't buy it myself. But if its offered to me for free, I figure its fair game. In that chocolate state of mind, this salad was born. My chocolate was not vegan, but I just used a couple of pieces, so don't have that much of a negative karma.
Ingredients:

1 head of baby/lolo lettuce (approx 4 cups chopped)

3 elaichi keras (or regular bananas, if you can't find them)

2 pieces of dark chocolate, more for garnish

2 teaspoons chilli flakes

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

But astonishing as this association of fruit (pineapple), oil (olive oil), and spice (vanilla bean) is, they are in perfect harmony. And I dare you to not like it!
Speaking of which, does the below mail reek of "booty call" or "aw, nice innocent gesture"? I thought I was just being sweet, but 30 minutes later when I re-read it (coupled with Claire from Modern Family ominous declaration of "Women in their 30s are like ninjas on the Internet - just want to sneak their way into some one's marriage." ringing in my head), it does seem ninja-ish. Oh well. There are worse things in the world than complementing a good looking guy. And no, I'm not going to provide a link to this mystery dude's facebook profile. ;-)
So, I reused the kalamata olives, gherkins, and peppers; and added cabbage and black grapes to the mix. The vinaigrette is made of 1 part red wine vinegar, 2 parts extra virgin olive oil, sprigs of oregano, and a heaping of poppy seeds. I'd bought the poppy seeds ages ago and hadn't even opened the pack till today - Had seen a salad dressing somewhere with poppy seeds added, so why not?!
If that is so, then today was the first day of putting my life to good use. Since the salad below has that tang from the olives and the gherkins, I just dressed it with rosemary-infused olive oil.
I made mine using red rice, which is notorious for having a really long cooking time (40 minutes!).

Adapted from: Vicky Ratnani's Onion and Brown Rice Pilaf

Ingredients:

1 cup red rice

2 red onions

Handful of raisins

Handful of cashews

Handful of charoli

Handful of green grapes

1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder

1/2 teaspoon coriander powder

1 teaspoon sugar

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

3-4 cups of vegetable stock (optional)

Salt to taste

To make:
Wash your rice, rinse, and soak in water for 10 minutes. Meanwhile chop your onions into long slivers and your grapes slit into two.

In a pot, heat the olive oil and add your onions. Let the onions caramelize by cooking on a low flame for 15 minutes.

Grind your cinnamon bark to make about 1 -1.5 teaspoons of cinnamon powder. Add to the onions, along with the coriander powder, sugar and salt.

Stir well. Add the rice once the onions have gone limp, and cook for another five minutes.

Add the vegetable stock, if available, or water to the pot, cover with a lid, and let it cook for 30 minutes (Less if you're using white rice). The rule of thumb is to add enough water to cover the rice and one inch above that.
Approximately 10 minutes before your rice is cooked, add the charoli, raisins, and cashews.

Add the chopped grapes into the pilaf 1-2 minutes before the rice is completely done.

While serving, garnish with more dry fruit, grapes, etc.
Notice the little golden chunks of tofu below? Pretty, right?

Now, WHY DOESN'T MINE LOOK LIKE THAT?! :)

It's a three part recipe - potato rosti, baked tofu, and a tomato sauce. I decided to just tackle the tofu bit. I didn't have most of the ingredients. So I used silken tofu (B-I-G mistake - It doesn't lend itself to baking and crumbles apart), sesame seeds instead of the sesame oil, Korean miso paste instead of the dark soy sauce, liquid jaggery instead of honey, and to hell with tamari.

Kinda reminds me of a classic Simpson moment (Wait for it, towards the end):
For lunch, a Kashmiri biryani which is sweeter than the usual Hyderabadi biryani and with chunks of pineapple (YUM! But since when did Kashmir become synonymous with a tropical fruit like pineapples?!). It was served with a yoghurt raita (thrown away) and a spicy pea-based gravy and a papad.
I do ask my mom to either make a vegetarian Parsi dish or to make my portion seperately and then add the meat to their portions later on. This time, its a dish called ras chawal, which would translate to spicy tomato gravy with rice. It's quite unknown compared to other Parsi specialities and I can't find a single recipe of it online.

We usually add mutton to this dish, or serve it with boiled eggs. But this one's all vegan with just potatoes and drumsticks. You're supposed to suck the flesh inside the drum stick, not eat the chewy fiberous outside. The recipe is a rough gist I got from my mom.
Sort of like an eggless omlette or frittata using maida (all purpose flour) as the base, peppered with tumeric and chilli powder.

Cabbage, Corn, French Bean Pancake

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons all purpose flour/maida

1 cup assorted vegetables (I used corn, cabbage and french beans)

2 basil leaves

1/2 teaspoon tumeric powder

1 teaspoon chilli powder

1 tablespoon olive oil

To make:
Chop your vegetables faily even.
On to the job at hand....

Make a post and link back to the person who awarded me. - Done

Share seven things about myself.

My name means Father's Pride in Persian. But my father, who named me, didn't know it at the time. I dug it up on the Net.

I may be one of the few people who doesn't like pasta, or steamed dumplings. I sometimes gag or almost want to puke when I eat those. Can't stand the thought of flour cooked in water.

Pizza, on the other hand, would be on my last meal before I die list.

I love dancing barefoot.

I would call myself a serial monogamist - the thought of spending all eternity with one person is a bit scary. Having said that, the guys I dream about (Tom Ford and Anderson Cooper) have been with me for at least 5-10 years and have no desire to introduce anyone else into my menage...

I love telling dead baby jokes - not so much because they're the funniest, but to see the look on other people's faces..like they dont think I am capable of such filth.

I am a magazine whore. I buy way too many fashion and women's magazines, I curate them well (many still in their plastic wrap), but rarely read any of them.

We don't get blueberries around here - like ever, not because its winter. So, I'd bought a can of blueberries a couple of weeks back. Having heard about a friend gorging on wild berries in another part of the world, I just decided to bust open the can and have some. I was quite disappointed - the berries looked purple rather than blue, for one; and they were swimming in a sugar syrup and I just tasted sweetness rather than any real flavor from the berries. That's Rs 270 gone down the drain. I was so looking forward to making a spinach and blueberry salad later this week. So, the only sensible thing to do with these sugary babies is to make dessert and put the syrup to good use.

My blueberry and bread pudding turned out quite nice. Would be so much better had I had some fresh berries. But then again, if I had fresh berries, I wouldn't dream of cooking them.
Blueberry and Bread Pudding

Ingredients

1 cup blueberries, extra for garnishing

1 cup torn-up day-old bread

1 teaspoon natural egg replacer (or one egg)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

5 teaspoons brown/cane sugar

100 mils soy milk

4-5 tablespoons of blueberry (sugar) syrup

To make:
Add a tablespoon of water to your egg replacer and mix well. Or as per instructions on your pack - basically, you want one whole egg.
